Avinash Gautam
Design Principal
Avinash has experience in designing climate responsive buildings and holds a Master’s degree from Kansas State University in Architecture with emphasis on Ecological and Sustainable Architecture. His expertise lies in sustainable design that improves the quality of the space and well-being of occupants. He is passionate about including daylight as the primary means to light spaces and incorporating cost-effective sustainable strategies for building design and operations. He started his architectural career in India while working on commercial and hospitality projects with sustainability as focus and later moved to USA for higher education. He believes in providing optimal design solutions involving judicious use of space and efficient utilization of the interplay of environment and design. He has worked on projects, of varying scale, in the arena of both architecture and interior design.
Avinash works as a Team Lead managing a team of several architects and interior designers and is based at EDI’s fast growing Bangalore studio. Before joining EDA, Avinash worked for a sustainability firm where he worked on more than 50 LEED projects, facilitated design charrettes, coordinated LEED and other sustainability ratings, and provided daylighting consulting. His project experience covers commercial, educational, healthcare, recreational, service facilities, laboratories, airports, libraries, hospitalities, residential and government facilities in North America and India.
He has presented at various conferences such as International Radiance Conference, Rocky Mountain Green, and at workshops for Colorado Governor’s Energy Office on various sustainability topics. During his stay at K-State, he also led recitation classes for Environmental Systems in Architecture for undergraduate students. His master’s research on climate responsiveness of vernacular architecture has been cited in many research studies. He is a LEED accredited professional (LEED-AP BD+C) and also a Green Globes Professional (GGP).
He believes in commitment to sustainability not only for environmental reasons but also for social justice reasons and gets energized by learning from people and places through domestic and international travels. He believes that the world is his playground as well as classroom!
