American School of Bombay-BKC Campus, Mumbai
As the planning and education consultant and design architect for one of India’s leading educational institutions, EDI was tasked to create a state-of-the-art campus to accommodate a diverse international student body.
To create a brand new 80,000 sq. ft elementary school campus as well as to renovate an existing campus for the American School of Bombay, EDI followed a slightly off-the-books strategy. The township campus, i.e. the existing main campus, contains a commercial office, multi-family housing, a shopping mall, an auditorium, and a cricket field. Transforming this into an innovative school campus would have been either a challenge or an opportunity in disguise. EDI decided to take it as an opportunity.
Instead of going with the regular four-walled classrooms, EDI designed “home pods” made of two moveable walls of cabinets on casters, thereby creating flexible spaces. This innovative architecture intrigued and excited students and provided them a view of the common areas, along with satellite libraries on every floor.
