Designing a primary school comes with the opportunity to make the environment playful, lively and interesting for children. VEGA School in the heart of Gurugram was one such interesting project for EDI. Curating a learning environment for children up to grade 5 required an unorthodox approach. The two cylindrical buildings, connected by vertical cores, are given a colourful and playful approach that reflects the functionality of the primary school. Interior spaces, too, have furniture that caters to various modalities of learning. In addition to that, pastel pallets have been used to boost focus and learning in children.

All of this innovation does not mean that we’ve overlooked safety or structural integrity. Square panels with insulation and high-performance glazing are added with an intent to reduce the heat gains. The roofing, too, is insulated and covered with additional tensile structures to withstand extreme weather conditions. Each cylindrical building has a learning pod with open classrooms, activity pods, and teacher’s collaboration areas. Overall the design promotes collaboration, interdisciplinary learning, play-based learning and movement.
